Portrait of Baby Lone, a Kickapoo Medicine Man in Oklahoma, circa 1917, with a proud mane of long hair that was important in many tribes. It was believed that long hair represents a strong cultural identity that promotes self-esteem, self-respect, a sense of belonging, and a healthy sense of pride. But he cut his hair and joined the army to fight in World War I. He employed his native skills in stealth and tracking to give his fellow soldiers an advantage over the enemy.
